About Us

We started Trestle after making a few observations:

  • Primarily driven by advances in sequencing technology, there is a need for those who can alleviate a growing bottleneck in analysis and interpretation of results.

  • The types of experiments that biologists are running, along with their associated analytical tools and best practices, are evolving at a dizzying pace, making it difficult to both determine how to analyze your data as well as how to reproduce other research that likely used a different approach.

  • Isolation of the analysis from those immersed in the biological problem results in a lack of mutual understanding between the two groups, slowing progress and limiting insights.

A Trestle is a framework used to support an elevated structure – such as a bridge – or in our case, our client partners. We want to help move your research forward by empowering you with the latest analytical methods and best practices.  We pride ourselves on our uncompromising standards, our focus on leaving robust and reproducible results, and our spirit of intellectual curiosity, collaboration, and service.

Our Expertise and Background

We have accumulated a large hands-on knowledge base in wet lab research and advanced analytics while working within both academic and private sectors. Our biological expertise includes mechanisms of gene expression, phylogenomics, image analysis, and high-throughput method development. We have a deep interest in how biological systems function and evolve and have spent 25+ combined years developing our biological intuition within academic research labs.

We combine this with 10+ years applying machine learning and optimization models to complex problems ranging from solving the structures of transcription complexes to minimizing vehicle routing costs. As a team, we are well positioned to help you identify the relevant signals hidden within biological data.

Our Services

Standardized Services

For analysis of data from commonly executed experiments, such as RNA-seq or ChIP-seq, we will manage, prepare, and crunch your data using computational pipelines that adhere to best practices while working with you to understand your problem so that we can find the patterns that are relevant to your research. Then, we’ll deliver a mix of standard and custom visualizations to help you share your research story. Other standardized services include streamlining the process of publishing your data and analyses following FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable) guiding principles.

Part-time Team Augmentation

Our team can be positioned as an extension to yours. With this option, we agree on how much of our time you need on a monthly basis and determine how we should allocate that time to your projects.  You’ll get our combined expertise, not just one of us, and our level of support can be adapted to your needs as they change.

Custom Data Science Projects

If you need help beyond our standard services and have clear research/timeline objectives, we will help design and execute a project plan to help you meet those goals, incorporating the right skills from Trestle at the right time, and working until the goals are met.

Jared Winkelman, PhD

“I have spent the last 15 years in academia developing new high-throughput experimental techniques to investigate protein-nucleic acid interactions involved in gene expression and bacterial development. ”

Bradford Winkelman

“I’ve earned degrees in math, economics, and operations research and have spent most of my professional career consulting as a data scientist for a variety of companies across many industries. I love optimization problems, cloud computing, and data visualization.

Jon Winkelman, PhD

“For the last 15 years I have been studying eukaryotic biology and the mechanisms by which cells move, divide and change shape, and how the systems controlling these processes emerged during evolution. I have relied heavily on microscopy, biochemistry and phylogenetics to approach these problems.”

“They enable us to look at things differently in order to create more powerful ideas and write more powerful grants. They give you new ways to get at your core questions in a way you didn’t originally think of.”

“They have really creative ideas for getting at some of our core questions. They help me to fail forward.”
